Medical College of Georgia - Medicine

Expert: J.P. Saleeby, MD - 11/2/2005

Question
Hi,
I have just been admitted in one of the good medical colleges of my country. I was wondering if you could give me some advice on what reference books i should consult along with the following prescribed books in our college during my first year:

1)gross anatomy:
Richard Snell, 7th edition, lippincott, williams wilkins
2)Physiology:
 Guyton and Hall,11th edition
3)Biochemistry:
Harper's illustrated biochemistry, Robert Murray,D.K. Granner, P.A. Mayes, Victor rodwell, 26th edition
4)Embryology:
 Langman's Medical Embryology,T.W Sadler,9th edition
5)Cunningham's manual of practical anatomy,G J romanes
6)Mcminn's colour atlas of Human Anatomy
7)DiFiore's Atlas of Histology

So would these prescribed books be enough or do you recommend extra consultation. Also how wide a consultation would you advise keeping in mind that I aspire to appear in the USMLE test.Lastly when do you recommend that I appear in the MLE test. Thank you

Answer
Ali,

It has been 15 years since I studied gross anatomy, physiology and pathology.  I would suggest purchasing ONLY the books your school recommends for the time being.  Books are very expensive and often times they don't pay for themselves in that they are not used often.  I remember I rarely used my embryology text because the lectures and handouts were so good.  So save your money.  You can always purchase more books once class begins.  What you have listed above are a good start.
