Medical College of Georgia - True Benefits of Vitamins?

Expert: J.P. Saleeby, MD - 1/18/2002

Question
Hello Dr. Saleeby,  Would appreciate any response to my question:)  I realize you are probably limited to what or how much you can elaborate on, but any personal opinion would also be welcomed:)  **Question;  I have a friend that is a 74 year old white male, and takes a very large amount of assorted vitamins.  I would imagine some vitamins are helpful to the system, but am not sure at what point they would stop being beneficial, or actually which vitamins in fact, are actually helpful, and which would be considered "snake oil" (sales gimmicks).  My friend has had a heart attack, and has had a stint placed in an artery/heart, and now seems to also have an ongoing obvious depression?  I am not a doctor of course, but he seems to have no energy, retired approximately one year ago, no excersize, mainly stays around his house, with no interests.  I am telling this, so hopefully it will aid in any response as to whether the vitamins he is taking (very many) are actually going to benefit him, the vitamin company monitarily, or if he should just seek out his family doctor.  I truly appreciate any response and/or advice you may lend, and look forward to any response at your convienience.  Have a great day:)  Ron

Answer
Ron,

Sounds like your 74 year old friend has major hormonal imbalance... just his age gives that away.  He would probably benefit from seeing an anti-aging / longevity physician.  I do a lot of nutritional medicine, but his vitamins and supplements need to be well balanced.  Tell him to stay away from traditional medical practitioners, they will probably kill him off quicker.  We offer intensive and comprehensive medical workup for people that visit our center from around the country.  visit us at www.longevity-institute.com.  If he does not seek help soon it could be over quickly with all his coronary artery disease.

Keeping you well into the future,

JP Saleeby, MD
