Medical College of Georgia - I had half of my toenail removed...

Expert: J.P. Saleeby, MD - 11/4/2005

Question
I had half of my toenail removed yesterday morning and today my toe is really red and looks alittle swollen..is this normal?

Answer
Imb,

A toenail removal is quite a traumatic experience for your toe.  Normally the physician performs a digital block, instilling Lidocaine into the base of the toe for anesthesia, then there is the physically traumatic process of removing the toenail... all of which causes inflammation and swelling.  So it is not uncommon to have such side effects the following day or two.  Keep elevated and take whatever was prescribed for pain/infection as directed by your doctor.  It should look better in the next few days.  Granulation tissue will form (pink bumpy looking tissue) and the healing process will begin.  The toe may be sensitive for a week or two.
