Question
Dad was in hospital 3 days.Fourth day he was complaining of poor care.Tried to move him,but his pcp would not do so.That morning he had heart attack.I was there. His heart was supposed to be monitored at all times. When moving him in bed nurse asked me if my father always looked like he passed away.I left room.It took 4-5 mis to call code blue. They got heart stated..too late.Brain damage.Moved across hall to icu.Passed 3 days later.Moved to hosp mge for 4 hrs.Next day funeral home tells me there are maggots on /in dads body.He recommends autopsy.County will not do it.I pay Cyril Wecht 3,800 cash.He finds maggots in dad's mouth,etc..is outraged..says he will talk to my lawyer. The plm is not one cares to take this case. Also found out it has happened again to another patient!County went in.Found nothing. But while i was in the hosp outside the icu came home with horrible bites all over legs. This hosp must be investigated.I am emotionally shattered. If it was YOUR DAD..what can i do?? Thank you...bless you. JIM

Answer
If you feel like you need to make a complaint against a hospital, direct it to The Joint Commission, www.jointcommission.org/generalpublic/complaint/, your State's hospital licensing agency and Medical Board, and go ahead and cc everything to The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (www.ihi.org) to the attention of Don Berwick, also the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality www.ahrq.org and the Community Medical Foundation for Patient Safety www.communityofcompetence.com and your local media outlets.  The Centers for Medicare Services, if he was a Medicaid patient they are collecting information about quality as well http://www.cms.hhs.gov/HospitalQualityInits/11_HospitalCompare.asp.
I hope you are well.
