Medical Malpractice - Doc. prescribing meds that may harm my child while nursing, and mis-prescribing meds.
Expert: Glenn A. Dorfman - 10/27/2009
Question I am 23 years old, and married with two little girls. At the "meet and greet" I brought my 8 month old to the visit and let the doctor know I was nursing. She prescribed me two antibiotics for a sinus infection. One of them was OK for me to take. The other was not. I found this out from a pharmacist after I took half the prescription. I ended up getting a terrible yeast infection and called the doctor to prescribe something for that. She called in another medication for the yeast infection that could potentially damage my childs liver. I didn't take the medication and called her again to get something else. I went back to her for a breath test for my lungs, she told me I have the lungs of a 51 year old, but never that I had asthma. She gave me a sample pack of "Advair" which is used for asthma. I looked online to find out if it was OK to take while nursing. It also is NOT. My husband sees the same doctor and she has also misprescribed medications to him. He made an appointment with her for anxiety and she gave him a prescription for blood pressure medication when he doesn't even have high blood pressure. It all just seems too weird to me. We can stop seeing her, but I can only imagine what she has done and is doing to other people. I would just think that she would have written down somewhere that I am breast feeding, and actually had looked at my file before prescribing me something so dangerous that it could hurt my child. I have never had such a problem with ANY doctor that I have seen. Please let me know if I have reason to be upset, and the steps I need to take to file a claim, if I can.
Answer If you believe that this doctor is incompetent, or worse, you should contact your State Medical Board and register a complaint. The name of the State agency that licenses and oversees doctors in your State may have a different name but you will find it. You can always contact your County Medical Board. The State agency will have a simple form to fill out. They will investigate.
