Question My husband has just been diagnosed with asbestosis and probale cancer. A breathing test showed that he has 55% of his lung function and 44% of his airway. We found this out on Tues then on friday oxygen was delivered and Hospice notified. The lung specialist says there is nothing they can do but see to his comfort as he dies. He was exposed to asbestos for many years, most of it related to the pipeline industry where the pipe was inulated with asbestos. He wants me to contact an attorney and there are so many out there. How do I find out our options and find a reputable attorney? I would really apreciate an answer to this because he is really pushing me to find one saying that he wants to make sure that our son and I are taken care of. We live in TX and there are a lot of ads out there. It is really scary and I find it hard to research or concentrate with all of this thrown my way. Thank you.
Answer I am sorry that you are confronted this sad situation. But I must ask, how is it that you are just now starting to think about finding an asbestos lawyer? Surely you husband has be sick and in respiratory distress for a long time; I would suspect years. Anyhow, I have not become involved in the asbestos litigation and therefore don't have any specific advice as to who to contact and who to stay away from. But you know what, I don't think it matters. Whichever lawyer you find to take the case does not get paid a penny until he/she achieves results from the case, which will probably take years. So, no lawyer wants to bother with you unless they think they can obtain a big result. Therefore, again, I don't think it matters who you choose. They are all in it to make money, as you are to seek security for your family after your husband is gone. I guess all I would like to know is that the attorney has long experience in the litigation. Contact one in your area or State that advertises on the internet under "asbestos attorney" and quiz them about how long involved, how many cases, and even ask for a reference. You can check the atty's status with the State Bar Association to make sure he is in good standing. That would be good enough for me. Good luck
