Medical Malpractice - mirena... are you really sure

Expert: Glenn A. Dorfman - 11/5/2009

Question
I came across one of your answers concerning a woman inquiring about a suit against the mirena company.  You had said that there was little to the case, but there was something ironic about your answer when you compared it to the silicone implants.  Just to highlight:
1) Thousands of woman that have or had mirena are suffering the same symptoms such has tinging limbs, aching joints,  that closely mimic MS symptoms but has not shown anything on their MRI.
2) Almost all these mirena related symptoms are identical to those that have had the silicone breast implants.
3) Mirena's method of releasing the hormones is created by embedding the hormone in silicone, which is then wrapped by a silicone membrane.
4)The effect of silicone on humans has been thoroughly studied.  The FDA did not ban silicone, but did urge more studies.

Answer
I don't recall ever drawing some comparisons between IUDs and silicon implants. In my opinion, IUDs, whether hormone releasing or just inert, are dangerous.  I have had a very large number of woman write to me with the same story. The Mirena disappeared and later found embedded or having perforated the uterus, requiring surgery. Years ago I handled hundreds of Dalkon Shield cases where PID and related ectopics, infertility and hysterectomies resulted due to an identified defect.  In regards to silicone breast implants, I quit that litigation when I formed the opinion that silicone is mostly or entirely harmless.  The question has been studied about as exhaustively as any other medical product question has and thus far, there has been no scientific double blind study showing a link between silicone and lupus, fibromyalgia and other chronic nuerological problems. I believe all the evidence implicating silicone is anecdotal and not persuasive.  The fact that the FDA did "urge more studies" means nothing of course. It's always good to study things more.
