About Paul D. Friedman, M.A., Ph.D., J.D.
Expertise
I have been a practicing civil trial attorney since 1989 dealing primarily with malpractice issues. I litigate very select medical malpractice cases on behalf of patients or their families. I am a Certified Civil Trial Specialist by the National Board of Trial Advocacy. I am also Certified in Injury and Wrongful Death by the Arizona State Bar Board of Legal Specialization.

In addition to my law degree, I received a Master of Arts in Bioethics and a Doctorate of Philosophy involving Medical Ethics. Because I am also an Adjunct Professor in Research and Medical Ethics at a medical school, I routinely consult with physicians and hospitals regarding medical ethics issues in an effort to improve patient care.

I can answer questions dealing with medical ethics principles. I can also respond to questions regarding potential malpractice issues.

Medical Malpractice - Finding the right lawyer

Expert: Paul D. Friedman, M.A., Ph.D., J.D. - 6/23/2009

Question
My father died of what I and everyone I talk to , believe was negligence . After a successful heart operation the hospital took several days to find out that my dad wasn't passing any waste because of a kink in his intestine . By then he went into a sepsis state and died. How do I find a great lawyer and being in Ohio how fast do we have to move ? Thanks

Answer
Bill,

There are a number of places to find the best malpractice attorney.  You can try the Ohio State Bar, the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA), or the National Board of Trial Advocacy (NBOTA).  Find out who is certified in civil trial work.  Another way is by word of mouth and by checking on the attorney's references.

I cannot give you legal advice which includes the statute of limitations in Ohio since I am not licensed to practice law in that State.  I also do not know if the hospital was related to a governmental entity.  You have a limited time to file a claim so I suggest you act urgently.

I am sorry to hear about your father.  I hope you have success in finding counsel with whom you feel comfortable.

Very truly yours,

Paul D. Friedman, M.A., Ph.D., J.D.
