Medical Malpractice - Prednison, insulin and glimperide

Expert: Glenn A. Dorfman - 6/9/2009

Question
My mother was admitted to the hospital a feww weeks ago for her copd, was given prednison by iv and was given insulin while there. she is not a diabetic and never had a sugar problem, ask themn why the insulin they said predneson can make sure sugar rise, the when released her she was on 80mg of oral prednison and prescribed glimperide, since then my mothers eyes are white all you can see is like a ;in siz pupil, she started having sweats, confusion and look like she was at deaths door, called 911 said her sugar was only 38 gave her somethin to bring it up and then next day had to to call 911 again same thing her sugar keeps bottoming out. So did she really need the glimperide for high sugar and was never informed to get a blood monitoring kit while on this, oly leraned this when going back to hospital and nurse told me shouldnever prescribe something like glimperide unless you use a blood monitoring kit. This is no the first time this dr had almost killed my mother over doed her back in may of last yesr, per her pulmanoligst cardioShe is now in hospital and I think this same dr has really messed up my moms adreenial system, and i think she was being tappered off predison too fast in adition to giving her biatic medication without knowing if she needed it our not.

Answer
Just based on the necessarily incomplete story that you tell, I can't form an opinion as to whether there was some medical negligence here or not.  Bottom line however is, assuming the insulin was not indicated in this case or negligently managed.......by lack of monitoring blood sugar level............the issue is, what are her damages? If you believe that she has suffered permanent and significant life long problems as a result of this, or the negligence shortened her life significantly, then it has the basics of a malpractice case. You don't mention her age but if she has copd and heart problems, it would be too difficult to sort out the specific injuries she suffered from the doctor's negligence and if she goes downhill, in any lawsuit, they will say she was headed that way anyhow and everything the defendant did was "within the standard of care". I don't think you will be able to interest a lawyer in the case due to the big expense of getting expert witnesses on your side but no harm in trying. Good luck.
