Subject: what happened to my baby

Question
Let me start by saying that my girlfriend and I lost are baby about two days ago. My girlfriend was about 4 months pregnant. It started about 2 when she started to have a little bit of pain in her stomach. She called her doctor about an hour later and she said to go to the hospital. Keep in mind that she was just having strong pains in her stomach. While we were waiting her water broke. (got to emegancy room about 5pm ) her water broke at about 7pm. I kept telling the nurse that we need to see the doctor and they kept telling me there was no room yet. About 830pm is when she started bleeding. I told the nurse again and they finally out is in a room. About 930 the doctor went in and asked her to get up so he can do a palvice exam and that's when I saw my baby fall to the floor. That's the worse thing I have ever witnessed. Sorry 4 the long story but I what you to know the whole thing. She had just seen her real 2 weeks ago I heard the babies heart beat. Her doctor said the heartbeat was 140 and that it was nomal. Her doctor gave her pills. Hydrocodone-apap 5-500 tablmck. Just want to know what happened? Could it have been prevented ? I know you hear hundreds of sob stories and I'm just one of then. But I just feel that what happened to my baby could have been prevented. And let other future parents know that if you feel any pain or have headaches you need to see a doctor soon. And don't let them make you wait. This is your baby your blood. I feel like I let my babies life end short because I didn't make the hospital take a look at my wife. They made it seem that it was no big deal and everything is fine and I believed them. They were wrong I was wrong  help me please. Anyone!

Answer
Hello Albino and thanks for writing,

I am awfully sorry to read about the sudden end to the pregnancy and can empathize with how traumatic it must have been for you and your girlfriend to witness the spontaneous abortion in this manner.  Obviously I cannot guess why it happened, but I can tell you that most miscarriages occur when the unborn baby has deadly genetic problems and usually these problems are unrelated to the mother.  It is estimated that up to 50% of all fertilized eggs die and are lost (aborted) spontaneously, usually before the woman knows she is pregnant. Among known pregnancies, the rate of miscarriage is approximately 10% and usually occurs between the 7th and 12th weeks of pregnancy.

I am sorry this happened but I really cannot guess at any possible “causes”, some pregnancies just weren’t meant to go to full term and nature ends them. You and your girlfriend may want to get some counselling as you did experience a traumatic event and some authors have projected that 10% of women who experience a spontaneous abortion meet criteria for acute stress disorder and 1% for posttraumatic stress disorder.

I am sorry I can’t be more helpful to you, but I do recommend you both seek prenatal care the next time you get pregnant so a qualified physician can monitor the pregnancy – of course even the best physicians cannot stop miscarriages.

All my best,
Margot
