Medical Research on the Internet - Blood group compatibility in marriage

Expert: Margot RN BScN CGN - 6/20/2009

Question
When a lady who is O. +ve, marries a guy who is AB. -ve. What are the possible implications, especially during pregnancy and the blood group of the children they may have..can they marry?

Answer
Hi Vera and thanks for writing,

Blood Group types is an issue when people decide to marry or have children, then it is the Rh factor that can lead to complications for the baby; a Rh negative mother and Rh positive father could result in a Rh positive baby.

Problems can occur if the baby's blood mixes with the mother’s blood. This can happen during  delivery when the placenta detaches or anytime their blood cells might mix like during a miscarriage (or abortion), with a fall, or during an invasive prenatal testing procedure [ie: amniocentesis or CVS].

We always recommend couples also request thorough premarital blood tests for sexually STDs and HIV/AIDS for both partners.  You should also discuss testing  for recessive gene diseases or inherited diseases with your family doctors.

I hope this helped, all my best,
Margot
