Medical Research on the Internet - Science Fair Project Ideas

Expert: Dr Khalid M Munir - 7/24/2009

Question
Hi Dr. Munir,

I am a high school student going into the tenth grade. This year I have arranged with my counselors to undertake a special studies project in which I will be developing a science fair project, and competing at county and state science fairs.

I have volunteered for several months at a local organization which helps people who have HIV and AIDS, Hepatitis, and other sexually transmitted diseases.

I need to have a project idea by the end of August/early September. I have collected several ideas, but none have really captivated my interest.

I am most interested in doing a research project that involves AIDS or Hepatitis research, cancer research, or a project that involves bacteria or studies bacterial resistance.

I was hoping you might be able to offer me some assistance in where I might go to look for inspiration for project ideas (seeing as I have pretty much extensively covered all most commonly advertised science fair project websites). Or if you have any suggestions for projects I could do that would be much appreciated also.

Thank you SO much!

-Holly

Answer
Hi holly,
If you want a really interesting project, you can go for some issue/scientific evidence which is nowadays a hot topic of debate the world over. You can make a project on the evidence which are given to prove evolution and also the evidences given by other group of scientists to disprove evolution. You can get plenty of material and images regarding that in books on these links:

Another Idea may be the phenomenon of epidemics like swine flu. You can make project on the various factors which cause their spread, various parameters used to measure their impact and so on.

I think the earlier one is a better and more popular idea. You can give the logic of both sides- the one that supports evolution and the other which proves it wrong.
Recently there was a lot of debate on this issue:

I hope this helps.
