Medical Supplies & Devices - fee for consultant opinion

Expert: Lee Leichter - 9/24/2000

Question
a well known doc has been a consultant to a company that developed a medicine. after he finished the consulting job the company ask him to write an opinion about the medicine. he want to know how much to charge them.

Answer
The amount a consultant charges is influenced by many factors.  In this case, if the doctor was paid an hourly rate for the initial consulting, this should be extended to cover the time to consider and write the opinion.  If he was paid a lump sum, and the sum did not include generation of the opinion, he should charge a rate commensurate with his hourly cost as a doctor.  If he is in private practice, this figure should be available from an accountant.  If he works for an institution, it should be available from them.  In the future, any consulting should be have prior agreements for the cost of additional services.
