Medicare, Medicaid, Insurance, HMO problems - Medicaid From Another State

Expert: Kyla Kelim - 9/21/2008

Question
My mother is currently on Medicaid through the state of Florida.  I live in Massachusetts and considering the possibility of moving her to an assisted living or nursing facility in Massachusetts.  How does Medicaid work when the member moves to another state?

Thanks,
Allison

Answer
Allison, someone is Massachusetts is going to be better off answering this question.  Vaguely, you are on the Medicaid, a state program, in the state in which you reside.  Once she moves to Massachusetts, then she needs to apply.  Most - if not all - states will have a period of retroactivity, in some cases 90 days, so it should not present a big problem.  The problem is going to be finding a nursing home that will accept her under these circumstances and arranging for transportation.

I hope this helps,

Kyla Kelim
