Medicare, Medicaid, Insurance, HMO problems - Medicare Medicaid dual billing

Expert: John Pedit - 9/22/2008

Question
I currently work for a podiatrist that sees many Medicare/Medicaid eligible patients. They are billing 99213 CPT codes to Medicare and with seperate bills going to Medicaid at the same time for 11056 callus care and 11721 nail care. There is no crossover billing being done. Is this allowed????

Answer
Hi Amy.

I can not answer this question because it is out of my expertise .  However it sure looks like double billing to me.  As a personal opinion:  If they are getting two checks for the same service, it is double billing and is illegal.  if this is true I would suggest calling 1-800-Medicare and request to speak to a fraud specialist.

John
