Medicare, Medicaid, Insurance, HMO problems - Medicare Part A

Expert: Merry Schiff - 9/22/2008

Question
Hi My dad fell from a tree last week after Ike went through cincinnati trying to keep branches from falling on the roof..he broke his femur and fractured his hip...he has to have surgery today and it will be only an overnight stay.  the are putting pins in his leg and hip...will his medicare part a cover any part of the surgery.  We are a little worried about what will be covered and not covered.

Answer
Medicare Part A and B come into play here. I assume that he has Original Medicare and not an HMO. If he has an HMO, he would be in a network hospital. If you do not have supplemental insurance, he will have a balance though for some of the services.

Part A pays for the hospital..Part B pays for the surgeon, anesthesiologist and other fees.

Hope he does well.

And, it is very easy to call Medicare when you are concerned about something like this. He needs you to spend your worry time on him helping him through this.

Just some advice. If for any reason you feel he is not doing well after he is home, be sure to call the surgeon and make sure he is seen. There can be, as in any surgery, some minor complications. Do not worry about disturbing the doctor. Make the call if you have any concerns.

Merry
