Medicare, Medicaid, Insurance, HMO problems - What is the medicare reimbursement for weight loss surgery

Expert: Merry Schiff - 9/19/2008

Question
I have just bought a new insurance policy because the health insurance that I have through my employer does not cover any type of obesity weight loss surgery or program. The new policy states that they will pay %80 of the Medicare reimbursement with no preexisting conditions. I have 30 days trial for this new insurance, and want to know the amount that will be covered to figure my expected out-of-pocket expenses. Could you please let me know the Medicare reimbursement for Roux-en-y laproscopic gastric bypass surgery, as well as the laproscopic Gastric banding? Thank you for your prompt reply. God Bless, Robin Keymon

Answer
I cannot give you an answer. Medicare reimburses according to geographical location. You can be assured that is not nearly as much as what you will be charged. I would be careful about canceling your employer plan before finding out exactly what you coverage you will have under your new plan. Most of the time individual policies offer much less coverage. Be cautious.

Merry
