Medicare, Medicaid, Insurance, HMO problems - mother-in law says she does not have medicare

Expert: John Pedit - 9/22/2008

Question
My motherinlaw is 90 years old and only has about 700 a month from social security. She does not speak english and I am afraid she is misinformed. She pays full price for her medicines , and won't go to doctor cause she can not afford it. I do not know what to do. She says she has been to medicare office before but nothing happens she still does not have any coverage.

Answer
Hi Jan

Go to Benefits.com and enter her information.  They will check about 400 programs and come up with any program she might be eligible for.

It might be that she was denied Medicaid because she had too many accountable assets.

If they are under $2,000 she might be eligible for Medicaid.  If under $3,000 The Medicare Savings Program which would pay the Part
B Premium.

You should check with the Social Security Office and see if she is eligible for the Limited Income Subsidiary, which would get her prescriptions for a few dollars.  While there get a copy of Medicare and You.  On the center of the back cover is the number for the SHIP program in your State.  Call them and request to speak to a counselor.  They will meet with you. look over the situation and furnish you with your options.

Hope this is helpful.

John
