Medicare, Medicaid, Insurance, HMO problems - Medicare and Cobra Insurance High Copayments

Expert: Merry Schiff - 10/23/2009

Question
I have Medicare part A %26 B also have United Health Insurance for Cobra. Medicare is primary and UHC Cobra is secondary.  I just had a kidney transplant last month. Medicare paid most of my immunosuppression and anti rejection meds. I call my UHC Medco insurance and they say they have not received any thing from Walgreen of submitting payment for my prescription. Which Walgreen is mailing me my meds. But my first copayments total to 178.88 in Sept and 95.00 in Oct becuase I couldn't refill them all cost too much. If i have these two insurance should i have to pay for such a high copay or any copay at all.   I was looking for organization to help me pay my copay but when they ask me about my insurance the 80% medicare and 20% UHC Cobra they said I shouldn't have any copayment because i am coveraged 100%. Is this true? So I might not received any help from them. Can someone help figure this out?
Thanks
Lynn

Answer
You need to find out if your UHC COBRA plan covers your drugs and how much it covers. You are probably getting your drugs from their mail order plan which. in your case, may be from Walgreens.
You need to call the HR department where you worked to see the coverage that you have. It is not unusual to have high copays for drugs that are very expensive.
