Question
Hi.  My mother has been unable to work for years because of a long-time back problem that's gotten worse and a torn rotator cuff that happened a few years ago.  I'm trying to convince her to apply for SSI, so she can get Medicaid long enough to get these problems fixed.  Do you have any tips about the process that I could pass on to her, or encouragement?  Thank you.

Answer
Hi Amber

SSI:  Go to the local Social Security Office and get a copy of the SSI manual.  Also get a copy of Medicare and you 2010.  Also a copy of Disability Benefits.

Go to Benefits.com====enter her information===click on Continue, and it will screen about 400 programs she may be entitled to.

If she is eligible for Medicare, look at the back cover of Medicare and You, and there will be the pones number of the nearest SHIP office to you.  Call them and request to speak to one of the Medicare trained counselors.  They will meet with you and look at the situation, and assist in getting any of the benefits that showed up in the check-up.

If she is low income there are a lot of options.

John
