Medicare, Medicaid, Insurance, HMO problems - Transferring state to state

Expert: John Pedit - 6/18/2009

Question
I am moving to texas and wondering if I can transfer my medicaid down there and how i go about doing that.

Answer
Hi Samantha

Because each State receives federal money for part of their Program and uses State money for it, each State has somewhat different regulations. Therefore you can not transfer benefits from one State to another.

So: you have to drop the coverage from the State when you leave it, and, reapply for Medicaid in the new State.  They usually have 45 days to approve your application, however, it is usually retroactive for three months.

If you have been approved for LIS or a Medicare Savings program where you are at, it will continue as usual despite the move.
