Medicare, Medicaid, Insurance, HMO problems - elderly patient, broken hip

Expert: John Pedit - 6/24/2009

Question
Before falling at the end of April and breaking a leg just below the hip joint, my 90-year-old father was losing some ground but still able to live in his own home with some household assistance.  Since leaving the hospital, he is unable to take his medications without supervision and now must use a walker.  Medicare is still prividing some assistance  with bathing and therapy since the surgery and hospitalization, but we believe he will need 24/7 supervision from now on.  Can you either tell me what alternatives Medicare will provide under these circumstances, or direct me to good sources of information?  Thank you for any help you can give.

Answer
Hi Linda

Locate the Area Agency on Aging that covers your area.  They have many programs and services that can assist you.  Request them to make a home assessment and see what services are available.

Also ask them to have a SHIP counselor to meet with you and make sure that the right insurance programs are in place and answer any questions You have on your father's coverage.  They are Medicare trained counselors and have no connections with selling insurance,

John
