Our medical practice has had similar issues with
patients whose Medicare replacement enrollments have been retroactively terminated back to the effective date. We have been told that this happens when Medicare discovers an error in the enrollment process, such as a patient's failure to return the required COB form within 30 days.
I'd strongly recommend that this patient advise her 2006 providers to file with Medicare. There is still time to do so, and some payment is better than none. Unfortunately, if the issue isn't resolved in her favor, she may still get billed for the Medicare deductible and coinsurance.
