Medieval History - Charlemagne

Question
QUESTION: In my craft class for college we were given the task to select a subject (historically based) and find the debate in the field about that subject. Since I was young I have always wanted to learn about Charles The Great (Charlemagne). I have found a few debates but I am looking for the home run. Must be able to find plenty of primary sources. Secondary sources on Charlemagne are plentiful but primary sources must feed into the debate aspect of the project. Please help or I will have to find another subject but I would really like to stick with this one.

ANSWER: Hi Eric,

I'll be glad to help with your question.

The good news about Charlemagne is that he had a contemporary biographer, Einhard, who wrote THE LIFE OF CHARLEMAGNE. So, that is the best primary source available for anyone interested in Charlemagne.

The full text of Einhard's work is available online at:

http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/basis/einhard.html

I hope that this is helpful, Eric. Good luck on your project!

QUESTION: Hey Marc,

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. However, there is a tricky part of my project. What are (if any) debates are there about Charlemagne. I have seen a few but maybe you might know of a few. Thanks.

Answer
Hi again Eric,

I apologize for the delayed reply.

The most important debates about Charlemagne regard his being coronation by the Pope on Christmas Day AD 800. Specifically, the issues are whether he knew the Pope would proclaim him the new emperor of Rome, whether he ever considered himself that way, and whether he wanted to be anything other than King of the Franks and Lombards.

Those are the main foci for debate about Charlemagne, Eric, and I hope that this is helpful. Good luck!

- Marc
