I know all the plot lines, and what characters are associated with each other. The only thing I may not be able to answer is music questions.
Question Is the guy in Desperate Housewives the same guy that played Matt (the gay doctor?) in Melrose Place - we are trying to settle an argument here at work..

You are absolutely correct! Doug Savant played the gay character Matt Fielding on Melrose Place from 1992-1997.
He can now be seen as the absent-father of four on Desperate Housewifes opposite Felicity Huffman.
