Answer Billy split up with Susan because whilst Alison was at AA she was supposed to attend a progress meeting with someone special and she invited Billy and left the message through Susan who neglected to tell Billy. This caused friction between Billy and Alison and when Billy found out he confronted Susan telling her that he could not commit to someone who is dishonest towards him and revealed the depth of his feelings for Alison. Susan responded angrily by declaring that she needs looked after too as she is a "strong" person and felt resentment to those who are weak as they get help and sympathy. She also revealed that she grew up with a needy alcoholic mother and that she saw how Alison had a drink problem before and how she used men while she was in college. Hope this helps.
