Question
I know your knowledge about this law is limited, but from what you do know, whats the difference in having a lawyer at a child support hearing than not having one. I can see why one would be needed if the 2 adults were married or something to that affect.

I dont understand why one would be needed if the 2 parents hardly know each other for maybe a few months, and have never had any type of relationship.

If the mother has a pattern of having various children with different men, does that have any bearing on anything?

Please help if you can. Thank you.

Answer
Dear Aaron,
In most states, child support is based upon a man's income.  Different states have different percentage rates, but for the most part, it's fairly cut and dried, mathematically speaking.  I don't think "dragging up dirt" will make much difference in the case, unless it is a custody matter.  If the mother is the custodial parent and you aren't seeking custody, then Family Support Division of your state basically just wants two people rather than the state to be responsible for the child.  I'm sure an attorney would tell you that you need an attorney, but I think  you can simply call the courthouse and ask them the financial basis for figuring child support and go from there.  Either the clerk can tell you, some counties and states actually have standard information written and accessible upon request.  If the clerk can't tell you, they can probably give you the number of the department that can.
This is just my thought here.  If there is no relationship between you and the mother, then there is no established lifestyle for the child between the two of you.  If it were me, I'd obtain the information as to how child support is figured in your state, go to the hearing and if that's what is decreed, then you've saved legal fees.  If there is something to challenge or appeal, then you can call an attorney.
I'm sorry for all involved.
Kind Regards,

Expertise

I can answer questions regarding G~d given rights of men. As a woman, I can answer many questions regarding the destructiveness of feminism, both to men and women. I cannot answer what it is to be a man in a time in this world in which men have been discounted and disrespected.

Experience

minister, counseled men regarding divorce, 'abuse accusations,' court ordered, anger management. Actually was removed from YWCA volunteer list for my belief in the Bible and support of men, rather than feminism.
