and since i only dab in auto repair (gas, not diesel) i was wondering if its a good deal and how much a timing chain is? how much is the cost to put one in?
here is what the seller told me via email.
"YES I STILL HAVE IT.
I DO NOT HAVE ANY PICTURES.
IT HAS 340K MILES WITH 40K SINCE THE ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION WERE REBUILT. THE FIRST SET WENT THE 300K AND COULD HAVE GONE LONGER IF I LIVED AT A LOWER ELEVATION.
IT IS A 3.0L 5 CYL TURBO DIESEL.
IT GETS ABOUT 28 IN THE CITY AND 32-33 ON THE HIGHWAY AND IT IS VERY FAST. ON THIS ENGINE THE TURBO CAN BE ADJUSTED FOR MORE POWER. IT'S WAY FASTER AND GETS BETTER MILEAGE THAN MY NEWER ONE.
THE CAR IS VERY SOLID AND WILL LAST A LONG LONG TIME.
INTERIOR IS ALMOST PERFECT. DARK BLUE MERCEDES TEX MATERIAL. FRONT SEATS HAVE HAD SHEEP SKINS ON THEM SINCE I BOUGHT THE CAR IN 1984. SMALL SURFACE CRACKS ON THE CENTER ARMREST AND THE DASH IS CRACKED. I PUT A COVER ON IT WHEN I BOUGHT IT. OTHERWISE IT'S LIKE NEW. THE EXTERIOR IS MERCEDES PASTEL GREY. IT HAS THE ORIGINAL PAINT EXCEPT WHERE SOMEONE GOT ME IN A PARKING LOT AND I HAD TO HAVE THAT FIX. OTHERWISE NO DAMAGE AND I AM THE SECOND OWNER. I WAS THE MERCEDES BENZ SALES MANAGER HERE FOR YEARS AND THE CAR WAS TAKEN CARE OF BY OUR SHOP. YOU WILL NOT FIND A NICER ONE AT ANY PRICE. THE CAR NEEDS NEW WHEELS. THE ONES ON THERE NOW HAVE THE CHROME PITTING AND CRACKING. THEY ARE ORIGINAL ALSO.
I HAVE SOMEONE COMING MONDAY WHO SAID HE WANTS IT, SO I WILL LET YOU KNOW IF HE TAKES IT BEFORE YOU COME DOWN. IF YOU CAN FIX THE TIMING CHAIN YOURSELF IT WILL MAKE SOMEONE A GREAT CAR. I SHOULD HAVE HAD IT REPAIRED BUT I NEEDED A CAR RIGHT AWAY SO I BOUGHT A 300SDL THAT IS NEWER BUT I DO NOT LIKE IT AS WELL."
also..
any particular older benz model that you would recommend me to start looking at. im looking for dependability and a diesel engine would be neat.
thanks for the help.
if you have any computer hardware questions just email me.
thanks,
Austin Craig
Answer This car will cost roughly $1,300 - $3,000 USD in parts to fix the engine, cheaper to find a good used engine and install a new timing chain on it.
My opinion:
The toughest and most usable older MB diesels today are the W123 240D OM616 = four cylinder (very slow), the W123 300D OM617 none turbo = five cylinder (slow), the W123 300D TURBO OM617 = five cylinder (good power), and the W126 300SD TURBO OM617 = five cylinder (good power).
