Methodists - Misnister's of the Methodist faith divorceing

Expert: Delton Krueger - 10/26/2009

Question
The past Sunday, an announcement was made at our church in reference to the minister and his wife getting a divorce.  Supposedly he has requested to be allowed to go ahead and pastor at our church.  Is this acceptable under the methodiat faith for him to retain his position, should he get a divorce?

Answer
Beulah:
There are no Disciplinary rules that cover this exact situation. Clergy do get divorces. Some continue to serve a parish and others do not. I suggest contact with the District Superintendent for counsel or make contact with Bishop of your Annual Conference. Within the local church the Pastor Parish Relationship Committee or other named body is responsible and should be consulted.
Your local church situation is unique. Relationships between pastor and congregation vary. Christian love is to be exhibited. At the same time moral responsibilities and obligations apply to both clergy and laity.
