Methodists/Altar Candles

Is there scriptural basis for the lighting of the altar candles?

Dear Melanee:

Candles on our altars are reminders of a time when church buildings had no electricity and were illuminated by candle light. Candles burned on the altar where the presiding clergy read from ritual texts.
Candles remain by tradition, and they remind us that the light of God's love continues to shine in our worship, in our hearts, in our lives.
But there is no specific Scripture prescribing altar candles.
