The bible doesn't say how old Cain and Abel were at the time of the murder, so it can be assumed that they were of an older age and that Adam and Eve had born several other children who had children and the population had increase somewhat. So Cain feared for his life because other relatives would find out about what he'd done and kill him. This is possibly the reason for a wife popping up out of nowhere also. In Adam and Eve's generation it was necessary to allow incest.  On the other hand, Satan's offspring were still available too, so maybe Cain and Abel didn't pass God's DNA test and that caused them to be eliminated from the bloodline.
