Mexico - Car Rentals in Mexico

Expert: Pam Smith - 2/6/2008

Question
I am traveling with a big group to Cozumel in a couple of weeks. We are planning on renting jeeps while we are there.  I have totally conflicting info on insurance with regards to rentals.  Are we required to take something? I have been told that even though it is in Mexico certain Visa cards and AMX cards will cover rentals.  Do you know if this is true. Can you point me in the right direction with this so I am better prepared?

Answer
I would rent your jeep with a reputable car rental company such as Avis.  It is best to go online and reserve it ahead of time.  Be sure to make note of any damage to the vehicle BEFORE you exit the property and then again when you return.  There is only one gas station on the island and it is in the heart of town.  Be sure you watch the pump as they fill it up, and make sure it is "zeroed" out before they start to fill the gas tank.

As for insurance, check with your car insurance company and see if they cover car rentals in Mexico.  If they do, then you do not need to purchase any additional insurance.

I am not sure about the credit card question...wasn't sure if you were asking if they accept Visa and Amex, or if those card would cover damage.  If you are asking about damage/insurance, I would check with your card company.   As for accepting, they will accept major credit card such as American Express, Visa and Master.  NOT CASH/DEBIT Cards!

Hope this helps!

Pam
