Experience Baja California questions, please. I have travelled the Baja for 38 years. I have driven the length of Baja more than once and know the cities of Rosarito Beach, Ensenada, Guerrero Negro, San Ignatio, Santa Rosalia, Mulege, Loreto and La Paz. I have not spent much time in San Felipe.
Question my family and i are planning a road trip to loreto, maybe la paz... give us some advice as to where to stay or go see. we have two small 4 and 5 year girls that are going with us. any info will be greatly appreciate it.
we are spending the night in ensenada and take off- hopefully to make it to guerrero negro... but if you know of any other small towns to stay...
we have been to cabo before, but did not like, we hope la paz is somehow different- any thoughts?
thanks!

Answer Cabo sucks. It is Honolulu quality reality. Ugh.
If you spend the night in Ensenada, you can easily make it to Santa Rosalia and/or Mulege. Plan on gas at El Rosario at the entrance to town from the north. A block later Tacos el Poblado, and about a KM or two later Baja's Best, and Tacos el Mision are good places to eat there. Plan on Gas in GN or a little further at Vizcaino. Have your FM-T ready for inspection at GN. Santa Rosalia is an old mining town with the only wooden buildings in a downtown area in Baja. Ya gotta see it and stop in at the El Boleo Bakery on the main road into town and get some bolillos. Best in the world. If you stay in SR, try http://user.aol.com/MulegeBaja/baja/frances.htm for lodging. The sisters who run it are delightful.
Mulege is a wonderful little town and it is a pretty area. Don Johnson and his daughters runs a great place at La Serenidad. He took care of me when I had car trouble on one of my many transpeninsular runs.
San Ignacio is a cool little town with a mission church that can't be missed. It is between GN and Santa Rosalia, plan on seeing it in one of the directions of travel.
Loreto is not interesting for kids. I normally get gas there but it has been a place where they have tried to cheat Gringos at the pump. Be careful to watch all attendants pumping gas in your tank, be sure to see the meter turned back to zero before they pump. DO NOT BUY gas in Santa Rosalia.
La Paz is great. The beaches just outside of town are incredible. You must try all of them. You can get maps on the web and at your hotel. http://www.vivalapaz.com/hotspots/beaches.html Balandra is a must. Some of them are directly accessible from your car. Others require a short hike that may include walking through low tide areas. Huge reward for trying these places. Pack all your food and water as you will need it except for Tecolote. In La Paz I would stay with kids at La Concha. Great pool, bar and very safe little beach area with no waves. Eat somewhere in town like La Fonda Located 3 blocks off the Malecon, at the intersection of Bravo and Madero or El Zarape Great Mexican food located at Calle Mexico between Oaxaca and Nayarit.
