Question QUESTION: We will be staying in Ixtapa for a week the February, then we would like to get to Melaque. We stay there for a week and fly out of Manzanillo. What would be the best way to get there? We aren't opposed to renting a car if you can get one, one way only.
Thank you in advance
Ron and Diane
ANSWER: Hola Ron y Diane,
The best way to get to Melaque from Ixtapa depends on personal preference and your pocket book.
I'd be tempted to fly to Manzanillo ZLO airport, then taxi to Melaque.
If you rent a car for a one-way trip, you would have to drop it off in Manzanillo or possibly at the airport, as there are no large car rentals in Melaque.
If you drive, make sure you do not drive at night in Michoacán as it could be dangerous.
Travel by first class bus would be the cheapest, but would be a very long trip time wise.
If you are looking for accomodations in Melaque you will want to check out my Costalegre websites.

QUESTION: Hola Frederico, Thank you for your quick response! You are very helpful. We are leaning towards renting the car. Which car rental do you prefere? We would likely keep it for the week as we will be touring around, then drop it off in Manzanillo the day we fly out. If we decided to stay somewhere for 1 night, half way from Ixtapa to Melaque, would you recommend San Juan De Alima? or elsewhere.
Salud! Ron and Diane
Answer Ok Ron & Diane,
I would not be able to help you much on car rentals companies.
See: http://www.costalegre.ca/Car_rental.htm
I have heard that it is cheaper to book your rental on-line in advance though.
Tracye Ross at Crazy Cactus in Barra may give you more incite on car rentals. You can e-mail her.
We have never been south of Colima, so do not have info on San Juan De Alima.
I will give you a hint that will save you time and money.
When you rent your car in Ixtapa, have the ZLO airport as the drop off point.
If you have Manzanillo city as the return point, you would have to drive about 80km from Melaque to Manz, then take an expensive taxi back to the airport.
