Mexico - safety

Question
Hello Mr. Mario González-Román,
I am dual citizen with Canada and Mexico. I have lived in Canada my whole live but am very curious about Mexico. I was wanting to go drive to Mexico and live there for maybe several months to get a feel for it. I would like to go about it in a safe manner too. Could you recommend certain places that would be safer areas that arent so much affected by drug cartels and such. Also, would it create problems for me to drive in Mexico with Canadian licence plates example maybe a target for theft or anything like that?

Thank you

Answer
Dear Alvin:

Thanks for writing. I've been to Canada several times. Visited Ottawa, Quebec. One day, my son, daughter in law rented a car and drove from Ottawa to Toronto. While we participated in a city run, got lost in Toronto, entering a neighborhood which did not look safe at all.

Stopped in a park to ask directions. A group of black youngsters were smoking pot, after I informed them was confused, needed their help, one of them tried to grab my wrist watch while the others started demanding money as they appeared to try to immobilize me. I refused, threw a few punches, escaped from tjem. Was chased in the street which made me end up in areas that I could not believe this was a so called .. "first world" country.

Yes, eventually found my group. Returned to the white, middle class streets most of Canada is known for, just as a pot-smoking society.

If I had money, the largest, more attractive communities with Canadians in Mexico are in Ajijic, San Miguel de Allende, Isla Mujeres, Puerto Peñasco. Visit www.solutionsabroad.com and click on cities. Also, visit www.insidemex.com

Study, analyze above information and the wisest decision, yours.
