Mexico - Expired Vehicle in Mexico

Expert: Mario González-Román - 11/6/2009

Question
I drove into Mexico and crossing into the border I got my car registered for
the 6 months temporary permit. While there for 2 1/2 months I decided I was
going to sell my car to a family member not know what was to come later. Just
found out it is illegal to sell a car in Mexico and now my permit is expired. I
am trying to figure out the easiest way to solve this. I understand from
authorities that this is a huge problem and I can get jail time and major fines
if this is not resolved very soon! Right now I am asking you if you know the
procedures on either getting my car back to the USA or getting my name out of
this mess and letting the person I sold this car to deal with it?!

Answer
Dear Carolyn:

There is a law in Mexico that reads "claiming ignorance of -in this case, customs regulations, indeed is no excuse, justification to break the .. law" if this makes sense. What you wrote, I feel depicts a good picture of what may occur. Before you hire a lawyer, my suggestion is to look for guidance through the authorities.

Have NO IDEA where you are writing from.

First try the closest Mexican Embassy

http://www.sre.gob.mx/acerca/directorio/embajadas/dirembajadas.htm

or consulate

http://www.sre.gob.mx/acerca/directorio/consulados/dirconsulados.htm

closest to your location, address your questions, concerns to them.

If your nationality is American and living in Mexico try

your Embassy site at

http://mexico.usembassy.gov/eng/offices.html

Ask for the closest Mexican customs office to your location (there is a link to consulates in the Mexican Republic as well)

Welcome to try the Mexican Customs website, make some calls, then decide what is best

If I can be of further assistance please write direct to frog_mario@hotmail.com

Best of luck!
