Mexico - Playa Del Carmen Safety

Question
Hello! My husband and I have booked a trip to Playa Del Carmen in the middle of May. Recently, I've been hearing about American tourists being kidnapped in Mexico. Should I be worried? Or is this happening in areas other than resort destinations? Thanks so much!

Answer
No no...don't be worried!  Playa del Carmen is perfectly safe.  Of course you must use common sense.  You wouldn't go off into dark allies or get into cars with strangers there, any more than you would here in the States.  But the kidnappings, crime, etc that is in the news is happining more up in the border towns.  The tourist spots are just to important to the economy for the police or the locals to allow anything like that to go on.  Go...enjoy shopping and dining along 5th Avenue, it will be fun!
