Mexico - Cozumel in June 2009

Expert: Pam Smith - 3/12/2009

Question
Hi Pam,
We have booked a vacation in Cozumel this June.  I am concerned about the drug wars in Cancun and in Mexico.  Will we be safe on this island, or should we come another time?  Thanks, Patti

Answer
Patti,

Please rest assured that all is safe in the tourist areas of Mexico.  Some reason the news has blown this all out of proportion.  The problems that they are having in Mexico is along the border towns, which are HUNDREDS of miles away from Cancun and Cozumel.  We can only assume that this was started by some colleges warning their students to be careful while on Spring Break, and then somehow it just ballooned from there!

Here is the verbiage we have on our website:

Concern has been expressed about travel to Mexico.  The State Department travel advisory says, "The greatest increase in violence has occurred near the U.S. Border”.  Reports of increased danger to American citizens are aimed at the west coast Baja Mexico areas, border towns and are also primarily aimed at those involved in illegal behavior.

All clients are consistently encouraged to be aware of their surroundings, not to flash money or expensive items, not to engage in illegal behavior and to use good sense in their personal security.  Per the U S State Department, “Common-sense precautions such as visiting only legitimate business and tourist areas during daylight hours, and avoiding areas where prostitution and drug dealing might occur.”

I encourage you to go and have a fun time!!

Pam
