Mexico - how to get a driver´s licence in mx

Expert: Ann Hazard - 4/30/2009

Question
What are the requirements for a first time Mexican driverīs license.

Answer
Hi Eva,

I answered this question a few days ago, but apparently it didn't get to you so they emailed me to answer it. I'll do it again!

First of all, it depends where you live in Mexico as to what the procedure will be. Here in La Paz, which is a municipio headquarters and the state capital, it's very easy because everything is here. In somewhere like Todos Santos it's totally different because the officials that do stuff like that are only there at certain times and it can take several visits to go thru all the steps instead of a few hours.

For us here, we needed proof of residency (recent utility bill), FM2 or FM3, Passport, proof of blood type (they had a clinic across the street to do the blood test), valid drivers license. There were several lines and it took almost 3 hours, but we walked away with our drivers licenses. There are various sets of copies needed, but in La Paz there is also a copying place onsite so that's easy too.

Like I said before, I don't know where you live, so I can't be more specific than that!

Ann
