About Dale Gress
Expertise
I am familiar with Puerto Vallarta-activities-art-locations of cyber cafes -churches- tile & glass factories. I have travelled by bus to Guadalara on several occassions and enjoy the market at Tonalah. I have also visited Lake Chapala (it snowed when I was there in Dec. 1997-left for the beach and the sun). This year I will travel to Morelia. I have also been to Puerto Escondido and Mexico City. I am familiar with purchasing property in the restricted zone and the use of bank trusts and Notarios. I love Mexico and it`s people. We recently sold our condo in Vallarta and we are in the process of purchasing one in Manzanillo, Colima. We have visited Mata Ortiz, Zacatecas, Guanajuato Morelia

Experience
I have been to Puerto Vallarta over 20 times and recently purchased a condo near the port. In January 2000, I drove my 1984 Volkswagen Van from Yakima Wa. to PVR. I have been studying Spanish for 3 years and I am getting better all the time. We have sold the condo in Vallarta and are moving to Manzanillo, Colima.

Mexico - Moving to Manzanillo

Expert: Dale Gress - 7/15/2009

Question
Dear Dale,

I'm considering moving to Manzanillo in the near future. I have done some research about the city but my wife came up with some questions for which I didn't find enough information. The questions are:
- Are cockroaches a problem in Manzanillo? I mean, houses have to be constantly fumigated to be bug-free?
- Are there big spiders or tarantulas in that area? My wife has a phobia about even small spiders!!.
- Are there strong hurricanes frequently?

Thanks a lot for your help.
Miguel

Answer
Miguel:

I have owned my home in Manzanillo for 4 years.

If you keep your home clean, cockroaches should not be a problem.
there certainly are cockroaches in Manzanillo.  I beleive that our condo fumigates twice a year.

I have never seen any large tarantala type spiders in all the 30 years I have been visiting Mexico.

We seem to constanly have very small ants.  They are easy to control with a mixture of water and bleach.

The last major hurricane to hit Mexico's west coast was 10 years ago and the main damage with 200 miles north in Puerto Vallarta to San Blas.  So far this year there has only been one minor hurricane- Andres. It was 200 miles off shore of Manzanillo and did no damage.

I believe there may have been 3 Hurricanes last year but no damage was reported in Manzanillo.  You can google the hurricane center for information on Mexican Hurricanes.

Good Luck
Diego
