Mexico - legalizing auto

Expert: Mario González-Román - 7/6/2009

Question
Do you know how I can legalize my 1997 4-runner and get Mexican plates? What are the disadvantages?
Thank you

Answer
Hi, Greg. Thanks for writing.

How? You have to get in touch with a customs broker (agente aduanal). These normally operate in your local SHCP Customs Department. Simply ask for someone to assist you in the legal process to legalize the importation of your vehicle. If you live near a US Consulate they can assist you identifying one as well (if they want to do it as this is not their obligation) since they need to get rid of official vehicles regularly and locals require this service. Ask for their administrative section or motor pool department.

Disadvantages?

I own a 1994 Saturn.

A wonderful acquisition. Really worth the process. Legalizing the car was really not expensive, when you compare the benefits. Everything is sweet and dandy, EXCEPT when it comes to parts. This is an ordeal, a headache. Unless you go back and forth to the US frequently, then there is no problem. I live in Mexico City. According to the law car parts can not be shipped from the US to Mexico, period. DHL, UPS or other messenger services won't take them. When those willing to help come across the airport carrying parts for you get too paranoid when the time comes to push the customs light. One never really knows how much to pay for the part. Always varies. They also get too nervous, particularly when reporting what they carry for your (car parts)to security. They get bombarded with thousands of questions.

Other than this, I am happy, satisfied with my car.

Best of luck.
