Question Hi Pam,my wife and I and 2 girls-age(11 and 14) are planning a visit to Puerta Vallarta and Cancun in May 2010. We wanted to ask you the best possible way to get to Vallarta from Carlsbad(CA,USA) and then onwards to Cancun and back to the US-either LA or San Diego.I was told that I could take a flight from Tijuana to Vallarta and then another flight from Vallarta to Cancun and back to Tijuana. The part of how we get to Tijuana from Carlsbad and back from Tijuana to San Diego when we return is my concern. Is it safe to travel and is there a shuttle? How do we book our flights online and what would be the routing as there is no direct flight from Vallarta to Cancun. Is there a H1N1(swine flu) threat in these 2 cities we are visiting? Is the shuttle safe from San Diego to Tijuana? Is there any problem crossing the border?

Answer At this time, I do not recommend driving through Tijuana as they are experiencing high crime levels due to the drug wars. Typically my clients in the Los Angeles area will fly from LAX to their destination in Mexico. I would suggest you do the same if possible. Than you can fly from Cancun to Puerto Vallarta, or viceaverse.
Swine flu is now present all over the world, with major precautions being taken everywhere to prevent an outbreak. All resorts are taking every precaution possible to keep there guests and employees safe, so yes, it is just as safe to travel to Mexico as it is to travel around the United States.
