Reading your blog at calli before I left the States helped me make the jump to live in Xalapa--just last month.
I'm a writer by trade, so with the Internet I can work from anywhere, and decided to work from Xalapa and "retire" early. Glad I made the jump!
My prepaid month at Jalapa Roy's cabanita is coming to an end and I'm looking to rent a studio or a room in someone's home in the Centro area. Do you have any ideas on how to find such a place?
My Spanish is limited but improving daily and I do have access to a local Mexican friend who speaks English to help converse with a landlord.
My "home away from home" is the brand new restaurant, Chimenea 1985, on Pino Suarez. If you haven't heard of it, do come by and give it a try. (I'll be the gringa in bifocals on her computer in the corner.)
Thanks for any help you can offer on finding a small living space for me. Your blog was so helpful to my move to Mexico that I hope to meet you one day!

Answer Hi, Kate:
Welcome to Xalapa! We have friends that live right across the Chimenea (and we know the owner) so my husband says he probably has already seen you walking from Roy's place.
My husband saw a sign for rentals (furnished) for foreigners. We are not too sure of the exact location, but the photos looked very charming. He saw the sign at the cafe right across from the Escuela de Estudiantes Extranjeros, kind of next to the correos building (behind Roy's). He says it was taped to the window of the Café.
We have seen plenty of small apartments for rent in the Ursulo Galván area (across from the Plaza). There are also some lovely apartments (more like studios) on one of the streets coming up from parque Berros -as you go from the Park to Roy's- they are a nice little yellow building, but I am not sure if they have vacancies right now. Otherwise, I would recommend grabbing the Diario de Xalapa newspaper and checking out the classifieds. They usually have a lot of rooms and small apartments for rent.
The other one I would recommend is closer to us, off towards the Jardin Botánico, but I believe it is rather full right now, it's called La Ballena Emplumada and it is an architectural landmark! http://xalapa.locanto.com.mx/ID_102169376/DEPARTAMENTOS-AMUEBLADOS-EN-RENTA-LA-B...
I'm sorry I can't be of any more help!
Do go back to my web site and write me an e-mail from my link there!
