Mexico - passport for air travel

Expert: Pam Smith - 7/12/2006

Question
I need to travel to Mexico on an emergency basis. Do I need a passport for air travel from NY to Mexico City?

Appreciating your help!

Answer
For this year only, you do not have to have a passport but you do have to have a "Certified" birth certificate and a valid drivers license.  A certified birth certificate is issued by the court clerks office of the town you were born in.  It is NOT the one that your parents received when you were born that has your foot prints on it.  It must state "CERTIFIED" on it and have a raised seal.  If you do not have a certified birth certificate than you can usually get one overnighted to you for a rush fee.  If you can not locate your court clerk contact number, let me know and I will help you find it.

If I were you when you get back from your emergency trip I would apply for a Passport as you will have to have one to travel to the Caribbean and Mexico next in 2007.
