About Panya
Expertise
Currently, I have 33 mice 12 boys and 21 girls. I also have 2 cats and tropical fish. I can help with behavior problems (I've encountered plenty), breeding, most health problems etc. I don't know a lot about genetics in mice.

Experience
I have kept mice for 7 years and I have a lot of experience with mice (some they don't tell you in books!). I would like to share what I have learned. To the left is Freckles, who had 68 offspring in his lifetime (he was 1 year when I adopted him). Behind him is one of his sons.

Question
Hi panya thanks for replying the reason im emailing you is i put the girl in with the male 2 days ago, now when i looked at the girl the other day i noticed that her hole was red&open but the other girl her hole isnt red&open so does that mean that somethings happened? cause my mother in law thinks she could be pregnant but now we've weighed her the other day&she weighed 30,im going to weigh her again at end of week.Thing is my mother in laws mice boy&girl well hers in pregnant due this week she noticed something not this week but last week she looked bit fat&this week shes getting bigger every day+shes seperated her but the girl is bigger than what her mum was so does that mean shes having more?

if you could reply thanks

michelle

Answer
Mice ovulate every 3-4 days and during this time the vagina can become swollen. This is nothing to worry about and is very normal.

Your mouse is almost definitely pregnant as mice are very fertile. If a male has been with a female for a day or two the chances are shes pregnant especially if there has been 'activity' in the cage.

Pregnant mice go 'pear shaped' around 2 weeks into the pregnancy. Weighing her is a great idea, although I have never tried it I'm sure it will work. It's a shame they don't do a stick for mice that they can pee on!

I'm a little confused about the question on your mother in laws mice. If you are saying that shes bigger in her third week than her second this is because the babies are growing bigger inside her, not that she will be having any more.

Please feel free to ask any more questions.
