About Tim Fenner
Expertise
Currently, my focus has been on the management of a Microsoft Windows, Exchange and Office deployment (with the majority of all servers running within an ESX Infrastructure 3 virtual environment). Along with supporting the previously listed solutions/products, I also have administration experience with an array of other technologies, such as backup solutions, SANs, anti-virus products, wired and wireless networking, mobile devices, VPNs, IPS, printing and much, much more...

Subject: Installing Exchange Mailboxes Remotely

Question
Hi,
I manage a network of about 150 users with a mix of Outlook 2000 and 2003. We are using Exchange 2003. Lately, 26 new client mailboxes have been created and management has given me a list of which ones to deploy to who. My question would be is there a way to install these mailboxes remotely without having to go station to station?

Thanks,

Lloyd

Answer
Hello Lloyd,

For a free solution for outlook 2003, you need a couple of things:

1. Get the Office 2003 Resource Kit Tools:
http://www.microsoft.com/office/ork/2003/one/ch1/PlaA02.htm

2. Use the Office Profile Wizard to create your Default User Profile. Use the Custom Installation Wizard to create your Transform for you Outlook install
(Including your newly created Default User Profile.)

3. Distribute those prfs via group policies, which requires the use of ADM templates. Other fantastic policy options in this adm template as well, not just outlook related:

As far as outlook 2000 goes, I have heard that several persons claimed they got it to auto configure using free methods, but I cannot atest to any of them.  Some included creating customized profiles for outlook 2000 using %username% in the mailbox name.  However, I never got it to work reliably.

I suggest manually installing the outlook 2000 mailboxes and then using group policy to distribute the custom outlook 2003 prf to the remaining outlook 2003 clients.

(you could upgrade your outlook 2000 clients to 2007, which auto connect to an active directory account's mailbox if there is one associated with it)
