Question
Microsoft Internet Explorer has started to hang over the last couple of months.  I could identify any pattern until recently when a couple of sites that I regularly visit cause the program to become unresponsive on some but not all occasions. where do I start to fix this problem.

Answer
Hi Rick,

With Internet Explorer opened, go to Tools, Internet Options, under the General tab click Delete under Browsing history, in the next window click Delete Files, Delete Cookies and Delete history.

Go to Windows Update and download the available updates.

Check for spyware. I would suggest downloading Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.5.2 for free from:

http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10122137.html

Check for viruses. Using Internet Explorer, go to:

http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/default.asp?langid=ie&venid=sym

Click the GO button, then under Virus Detection, click Start. You might be told that you need to download and install ActiveX Controls for the scan to work, answer Yes.

Write down exactly anything it finds, then go to: http://www.symantec.com/search/  and do a search for what was found. Symantec usually has a removal tool and/or directions for removing manually. Make sure that you follow the instructions for removal, step by step, especially the part regarding disabling System Restore.

Open My Computer, right click Local Disk - C, click properties, under the Tools tab click Defragment Now.

Hope this helps!
Lorry
