Microsoft Internet Explorer - icon not displaying in url

Expert: Lorry - 9/10/2009

Question
Hi
I added code  <link rel="shortcut icon"  href="myic.ico" type="image/vnd.microsoft.icon" />  like this to display icon in the address bar. It is displaying without any problem. But once deleted offline contents and loading the page again it is not displaying. I have noticed this issue for google and other sites also. after deleting from temp folder if we add to favorites again, then next time when we load, icon will display in url. without adding to favorites again is there a way to display icon in url.

Answer
Hi Asha,

To resolve this problem, modify a display setting to force Windows to update the icon cache. To do this, follow these steps:

Right-click a blank area of the desktop, and then click Properties.

In the Display Properties dialog box, click the Settings tab.

In the Color quality list, select a color depth other than the current color depth. For example, if the current color depth setting is Highest (32-bit), click Medium (16-bit).

When you are prompted to keep the new settings, click Apply, and then click Yes.

In the Color quality list, select the original color depth, click Apply, and then click Yes.

Click OK to close the Display Properties dialog box.

This happens because of a few reasons:

- You've 'cleaned' the hard drive, emptying your browser cache

- You've had a browser window 'crash', corrupting your 'favicons'

or a few other reasons. The best way to fix it is to delete the website's 'Favourites' entry, and then add it again.

Hope this helps!
