Microsoft Internet Explorer - AOl removal

Expert: Frances Rhea - 8/23/2004

Question
A user in our organization accidentlally installed AOL 7 and Compuserver2000 on his XP pro machine (a Compaq with 256k of RAM).  After this installation, every time he tries to access the internet with Internet explorer 6 a logon box appears requesting logon to our ISA server.  No settings were changed in the ISA server.  I have been unable to remove either App.  The uninstall program freezes when run.  I have removed several portions of the registry with AOL tags, but there are lierally hundreds of entries.  There is no dial up adapter to remove from networking.  Msconfig shows no program running in the background at startup.  Today I completely deleted the AOL and Compuserve folders to no effect.  I have no clue as to why this logon box persists.  Signing in with a legal account through this logon works butis cumbersome. Any ideas?

Answer
First, go to Control Panel and open Dial Up Networking. make sure that AOL and Compuserve are removed from there. Now open Internet Options and click on Connections tab and then click Settings. Make sure that the correct information is entered for your system dialup. (I assume you are on a LAN so make sure those settings are correct. Contact your administrator if you need the correct info.)

Now to Repair IE files. Go to this page at Microsoft for detailed instructions:

The next step is to get a good registry repair program. This is important so that all of the AOL and Compuserve information is not corrupting the registry. Here is a link to a couple:

Registry First Aid ($21)
http://www.download.com/Registry-First-Aid/3000-2094-10110373.html?tag=lst-0-1 (This is the one I use. Unregistered it will fix 10 entries but can be used multiple times.)

Registry Clean Expert ($29.95 w/15 day trial)
http://www.download.com/Registry-Clean-Expert/3000-2094-10309593.html?tag=lst-0-...

Registry Mechanic ($29.95 will only repair the first 6 sections without registering)
http://www.download.com/Registry-Clean-Expert/3000-2094-10309593.html?tag=lst-0-...

If after alll this you are still having trouble let me know and I will provide further assistance.

Fran
