Question
QUESTION: Hi
When I try opening certain web pages(e.g. www.bangaloretelecom.com) it takes a long time and shows “The page cannot be displayed”  message.  Some times when I open any site (google.com)  the same message (as mentioned earlier) appears but when clicked on refresh or F5 the site opens.  I was initially using IE 7 rolled back to IE 6 because of this problem.

My system Spec.
2.8Gh Intel HT with Intel 915 mother board.
768mb ram 333Mhz
512mb ATI 1600series GC
1mbps Broadband connection
Widows XP pro
IE 6
Office pro 2007
Mc Afee 8.5 Antivirus
no Proxy used

ANSWER: Probably some of your core IE or Windows files are damaged. This can happen when installing software.

First check system files by clicking Start, Run. Type in 'sfc /scannow' and click OK. (You may need your Windows install disk.) When complete, reboot and see if that helped.

If not, try this article at Microsoft to repair IE:

If none of this helps let me know.

QUESTION: Hi I tried the above option still no luck.
I also tried to beet the system with XP Cd and selected repair  option there. The Windows repair was successfully completed but still no luck.

ANSWER: Have you gone to Windows Update to see if all of your files are updated? It may solve some of the problems. Open IE, click on Tools, Windows Update.

Hope this helps.

QUESTION: Hi Fran,

I have done as per your guidance but still no luck, in fact now i am not able to open google or allexperts etc link at the first attempt. I will have to refresh the page again and again  for it to open. To check if it is a internet problem, i had connected my laptop and everything worked fine at first go. I have in fact updated to IE 7 still no luck. Now the  sites take more time to open also.

Answer
I noticed you are using McAfee. You should do a complete virus scan on your computer. If they have an online scan that is more thorough you should use it. If not, try this one at Panda:

www.pandasecurity.com

Click on the free virus scan on the left.
